UEFA Europa League Draw

Liverpool (England) vs Unirea Urziceni (Romania)

When it comes to sport I’m an eternal optimist. However unlikely, as long as it’s still mathematically possible, I carry hope we can still win the league. Some people have lowered their sights to merely making the Top 4 this season, but that’s not good enough, we should be gunning for the title.

We’re out of the Champions League but we still have a good shot at winning the Europa League, doing well in the FA Cup and finishing top 3 in the Premiership.

I trust Rafa and believe we should stick by him. Let’s not make excuses, let’s put a winning run together.

The team is low on confidence and morale, but it’s in times like these that I feel like putting more support behind the club rather than whining about injuries, the Americans, or the gaffer.

I’m looking forward to Portsmouth tomorrow, let’s get the season back on track.

Julian Casablancas - I Wish It Was Christmas Today

I went and saw JC on Tuesday night. It was the first time I’ve been to a show and felt old, a group of drunk boys (that didn’t even look old enough to get into the venue) were shoving people around, people were screaming out “Strokes! Strokes! Strokes!” and some sweaty continentals were grinding into me. It had me frowning at everyone.

But Julian was good enough and after he’d warmed into it, sent me home satisfied by singing this song in encore followed by Glass (which is one of the better songs on his pretty decent album).

This is Spencer Krug’s solo project. Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, Swan Lake and now Moonface, the guy’s prolific.

I would share it with you in accessible form of an audio post but this track is a 20+ minute epic. Instead, you can download it here (voluntary donation or free, up to you).

The vinyl edition released on January 26, 2010.

Also, Wolf Parade are touring next year (I’m seeing them play London in May!).

Autonomous, self-reliant.

One of the things that I noticed, while in the company of some very accomplished people at Stanley Kubrick’s house last week, was that I didn’t belong. And even though as a fan I had as much right to be there as anyone else, to be honest, I felt like a bit of an upstart, almost like Barry Lyndon if you will.

I realized that what set me apart wasn’t anything to do with talent or social class, it was to do with direction and ambition. Direction being one of the things I feel has been missing in my life recently.

As I mentioned on Sunday, I’ve started back at work this week in earnest.

Since Sunday I’ve slowly come to the decision that over next four months, I will drastically reconfigure my portfolio.

I expect that these measures will cut my current cash-flow/income by approximately half, but will lower the risk profile of my investments to an even greater extent (practically 100%).

This decision will leave me with a more modest, but sustainable, base income (increasing quarterly), for the rest of my life.

I’m sure that this more modest income will feel like a depressed standard-of-living (especially initially), but London has already proved itself a town where you can live an exceptional life cheaply (and most of my one-off set-up costs have already been expended).

The hard work in this endeavor will not only come in the form of streamlining/simplifying my expenses, but also in the way I utilize the excess capital (which I intend to use for day-trading).

I want to build on the start I’ve made in London, whether or not I can day-trade myself into my very own apartment within a two year time-frame remains to be seen, but that’s the goal (NYE 2011, I’m looking at you).
